Beautiful, large and extremely rare Renaissance majolica vase with an ovoid body shape, in stepped neck supported by three stylised grotesque griffins / dragons, standing on a large raised three sided pedestal. Its shape and rich metallic luster decoration takes inspiration in the XV-XVI centuries Italian Renaissance style, specifically that of Deruta and Gubbio craftsmen. Who in their term, have taken their inspiration in the earlier, XII-XIII centuries luster ceramics from Manises, Spain and developed a totally unique technique of luster coating for their ceramic wares. The metallic luster on this vase comes in a full range of colours used in the Renaissance period – variations of gold – from pure gold to the shades of shiny brown and green and a beautiful ruby red. The master experimented in applying cobalt blue layer over the luster, to create a new iridescent blue colour. The main motif of the decoration is dragons or griffons. The wide band features an oval medallion with the portrait of a young man in a in golden military period attire and helmet decorated with a dragon and scarlet crosses, set between golden winged dragons with leafy tails in the Raffaellesco style, against a deep cobalt radiating background. The man on the portrait is St. George (San Giorgio in Italian), III c. early Christian martyr and the saint patron of a number of Italian cities. According to the legend, George was a Roman soldier who rescued a Libyan king’s daughter from a dragon and then killed the monster in return for a promise by the king’s subjects to be baptised. George was later tortured and decapitated under Diocletian’s persecution of Christians, in 303. This is a theme much represented in art, the saint frequently being depicted as a youth wearing knight’s armour with a scarlet cross. The short expanding neck is separated from the body with ruby red and blue luster linear and zigzagging scrolls. Top of the body is taken by leafy ornaments and is separated from the main band by two ruby red luster bands. Similar treatment is applied to the bottom of the body decoration, finishing below with the 16-ray golden luster star. Three one-footed winged and breasted dragons / griffons supporting the body are also fully covered with rich iridescent green luster coat. The complex shape base is richly scrolled on the perimeter. The vase created in the early XX c by the great master Lorenzo Rubboli, the son of the famous master Paolo Rubboli (1838-1890), who in 1873 reintroduced the production of high quality luster-decorated majolica ceramics in the Renaissance tradition to Gualdo Taddino, after a period of slow decline that lasted until the 2nd half of XIX century. The decorations he used were of XVI c tradition that combined scenes and subjects of classical inspiration with grotesques, leaves and portraits. Paolo Rubboli learned ceramic art at Doccia Ginori factory before moving to Gualdo Tadino, where he orchestrated a second coming of luster majolica, trained many ceramics masters and sparkled a strong tradition in Umbria ceramics that continues to our days. Metallic lustre decoration is an extremely long and complex process. It is achieved by application of a mixture of metal salts and clay diluted with wine vinegar, and a special firing, that produced iridescent chromatic effects in golden yellow, ruby red and silver colours. The mixture was applied by brush to the already finished, enamelled and fired objects, usually in the spaces specially left clear at time of decoration. Then objects were fired for the third time, to produce extraordinary colour effects, from golden yellow, to ruby red and silver. Low temperature firing (about 600 ° C) was carried out in a specific oven, called a muffle, where only particular woods that produced a lot of smoke. Smoke was needed to prevent the oxidation of the metals. After firing and a slow cooling, the wares were cleaned. The residues of dough and smoke left on the surface were removed allowing for the metallisation to come forward and shine. Painted to the bottom with RUBBOLI L. GUALDO IT. hand painted mark in dark blue colour. Vase comes in the good condition given its age. One of the dragon’s noses has a small chip. The base has numerous varnish and gloss scales at the corners. There is an occasional scaling and pores of the varnish on the dark blue luster on the body of the vase, result of the firing flaws.
