Welcome to Pioneer Fossils! A photo Certificate of Authenticity will accompany this specimen. Also a free stand. Here is a spectacular Pyrite “sun”, from the Shale beds of Sparta, Illinois. From the Pennsylvanian period, about 300-350 million years ago. Long before the first dinosaur. What we see now as jet-black slate, millions of years ago was carbon-rich material that turned to coal over vast periods of time and great pressure. Then some of it turned to the slate we see as the black matrix in this specimen. The pyrite “sun” was formed by pyrite, under great pressure in a seam, being forced out in a radiating pattern. Almost all pyrite suns are from this area around Sparta, Illinois. They were extracted by coal miners about 300 feet below the surface. However, six of the seven coal mines in the area have closed, and the only one open cannot dig the high-sulfur content coal due to EPA regulations. So… no more of these on the horizon, and the Chinese Pyrite “suns” look quite different. This Sun is about large, at about 3.2″ by 2.8″ (varies). The slate plate is about 8.5″ by 10.7″ (varies greatly, see photos), and it weighs about 4 lbs. 15.8 oz. These are some of the most beautiful specimens of the rock and mineral world. The black and the golden color go superbly well together. If you take good care of this piece, it should last a long time. We have a collection of these we purchased in 1999, and all of them still are stunning. However, because it is Iron Pyrite, it is worthwhile to go over a few points of extending the life of the pyrite. First, avoid as much as possible touching it (the pyrite, you can touch the slate). Hands have sweat that will harm pyrite over the years. Keep the pyrite dry, and try and keep it out of a high-humidity place. If you have no choice, put a dessicant near it, like the kinds you find in shoe boxes. The drier, the better. Also, careful not to drop it. Not only might this break the slate, but it can remove the sun from the plate. It this happens, the sun can be glued back onto the slate. We invite you to visit our store.
