Kenwood/Trio made some of the sweetest sounding amplifiers from late 1960’s through the 1970’s with transformerless circuitry that was distinguished by wide frequency response, warmth and an impressive detailed midrange presentation. Quality standards began to decline towards the end of the 70’s and by the mid-1980’s dramatic changes in circuit design and build quality had reduced most of the distinguished Japanese brands to mass market mediocrity. The Kenwood KA-305, which began its run in 1979, straddles this sea-change in quality. Cosmetically it resembles the classic Kenwood amps, but most of the 305’s were made in Singapore with lower build quality and lightweight construction that set them apart from their predecessors. Despite this cheapening, it is a relatively fine sounding amp with considerable power (40 wpc) that receives considerable on-line praise from many purchasers. It still boasts Kenwood’s outstanding direct coupled, wide bandwidth circuit design, very low distortion, excellent noise specs and a fine phono stage . Convenience features include 3 AC outlets, defeatable tone controls (direct bypass switch) and source/tape monitoring. The KLH Model Seventeen were a classic example of the “New England Sound” 2-Way Acoustic Suspension speakers that dominated the exploding hi-market in the mid and late 1960’s. This 8 ohm full-range system featured a long excursion 10 inch woofer and a 1.75 inch direct radiator tweeter with smooth response and excellent midrange performance and good dispersion. The enclosure is a heavy 3/4″ wood veneered, completely sealed and filled with fiberglass. 24″x 12″x9″ There is a three position switch for high frequency level.. Although described as an entry level full range speaker, the Seventeen was widely praised at the time and continues to impress bookshelf modern users who favor the rich and warm sound of that era. 12 watts per channel is sufficient to drive these speakers , sothe KA-2500 will easily drive them to top performance We offer another choice to pair with the amplifier : the Realistic Optimus- 2B from 1975,. It offers a sound that is very comparable to and competitive with the classic 2 way acoustic suspension speakers from KLH and Acoustic Research which were so popular into the 70’s.
